The Wharf Open House : Wharf owner Art Favre and his staff hosted a recent reception to introduce new attractions and new tenants before leading a champagne toast to launch The Wharf's Spectra Sound & Light Spectacular, the main attraction of the Wharf's 100 Days of Summer. Spectra is a state-of-the-art installation delivering popular, surround sound music set to choreographed lighting effects on the palm-lined Wharf Main Street. Shows begin on May 24, with performances nightly at 8:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. Music is specifically selected to engage the audience and immerse visitors into a very sophisticated light show experience. 100 Days of Summer is the new ongoing summer theme for a season full of fun-packed concerts, tournaments and festivals at the Orange Beach dining and shopping destination. The Wharf’s Amphitheater has already announced Lady Antebellum and Dave Matthews. Rockin’ Thursdays, a street party with live regional music acts, will return. The Blue Marlin Grand Championship, Orange Beach Billfish Classic, ArtWharf, and The Color Run will also return this summer. The Wharf's Family Fun Zone, a collection of twelve attractions and a midway area with games, will open Memorial Day Weekend. Food and beverages will be served, but alcohol will not be permitted in the Family Fun Zone's family-friendly environment. The Wharf is located at the southend of the Foley Beach Express on Canal Rd.

Kiwanis Club of Gulf Shores Poker Run : Kiwanis Club of Gulf Shores Hi-Lo Poker Run A good hand of poker resulted in a $10,000 purse for one lucky player during the 17th Annual Kiwanis Club of Gulf Shores Hi-Lo Poker Run on May 11. But local children were the real winners, as The Poker Run has raised over $200,000 for more than 30 youth oriented Kiwanis charities during its 17 year run.

More than 2,000 lbs. of steamed crawfish. Spectacular views of the Gulf of Mexico behind glistening sandy white beaches. What was not to love about the Mother's Day weekend Flora-Bama Jammin’ Jambalaya Cajun Crawfish Jamboree? Good times with good friends. And for good measure, a portion of the sales of jambalaya and crawfish were donated to the New Orleans Musicians Association Foundation to help musicians with low cost primary healthcare.

Christian Service Center Spaghetti Dinner : The Christian Service Center had its annual Spaghetti Dinner on February 18 at the Gulf Shores United Methodist Church Auditorium. Reef Wranglers Premiere at LuLu's : The three D’s - diving, demolition and determination - drive the Walter family in the daily grind of their Orange Beach company, Walter Marine, one of the largest reef builders in the U.S. The family is now sharing those three D’s with the world in a Weather Channel reality TV show - Reef Wranglers. The show follows the local family business as its divers and demolition experts reduce erosion and pollution while adding to the Gulf of Mexico’s thriving ecosystem by creating artificial reefs - sinking everything from a Vietnam-era plane to a local shrimp boat. Treasure of the Isle Goodwill Parades : Once again the Treasures of the Isle, Mardi Gras Krewe in Orange Beach, held their Goodwill Parades at Day Break Senior Day Care, Foley High School Magnolia Room and Golden Living Nursing Home! This was the 3rd Annual Goodwill parades! Fun was had by all and the TOI members were blessed to be able to bring smiles to faces of all ages! One of the members, Sunny David is a Physical Therapy resident at Golden Living and she was very excited to see all her TOI friends! The children at Foley High Magnolia Room were all smiles, clapping their hands and dancing the Second Line with the Krewe! Flora-Bama’s Annual Super Chili Cook-Off Raises $4K for Relay For Life : The 19th Annual Super Bowl Chili Cook-Off at the Flora-Bama raised over $4,000 for the American Cancer Society/Relay for Life. The Flora-Bama Lounge & Package welcomed 18 teams - all with one singular goal: To make their best version of chili. The teams had a blast while cooking and listening to Jason Justice & Hung Jury on the tent stage. The cost for those who wanted a taste of the chili was $2/bowl or $10 for 6 bowls. That’s a lot of chili. Super Bowl Chili Cook-Off Winners were 1st Place: Kit Carson Chili from Chmuckla. Team members: Ed Carson, Jerry Mock, and Ted. 2nd Place: Team Thick from Louisiana. Team members: Eric Warthen, Mike Dreher, and Meg Daniel. 3rd Place: The Three Wiseman from Waunakee, WI. Team members: Ed Kruschnek, Dave Lane, and Roy Watson. Bear Point Civic Association holds Christmas Golf Cart Parade. : The second annual BPCA Christmas Golf Cart Parade was held on Sunday evening, December 9, 2012 with twenty-two beautifully decorated carts participating. The first place winners were Bruce and Marilyn Robinson whose cart was decorated as a shrimp boat. Golf cart owners in the neighborhood have become very competitive in decorating their carts for this event, with some planning for 2013 already. The event is open to any golf cart owner in the neighborhood and surrounding community. Beginning at the BPCA clubhouse on Bay La Launch Avenue, the parade wound around the streets of the Bear Point community. Trinkets were thrown to the neighbors who gathered on the streets to watch the carts, some of which had Christmas music playing as they passed. A few of the carts are pictured here.

Mystical Order of Mirams Taste of the Islands at The Wharf : The Mystical Order of Mirams will host their 6th Annual Taste of the Islands on November 30 beginning at 6 p.m. at The Wharf Convention Center in Orange Beach. This year’s culinary extravaganza will include over 35 restaurants from Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and surrounding areas. The Wharf Conference Center location is perfect for this holiday gala, which will consist of food sampling, all inclusive cocktails and musical entertainment. The Mirams charities of choice are Toys for Tots and Orange Beach Fire and Rescue Ladies Auxiliary. The Mystical Order of Mirams are known for supporting the community during the holiday season. Please bring an unwrapped toy to benefit local children in need. Musical entertainment will be provided by Chad Bradford from Nashville. Chad’s band will keep you dancing throughout the night and will be sure to put you in the holiday spirit.

Gulf Coast Ballet’s Nutcracker Dec. 2 at Foley Civic Center : The young dancers of Gulf Coast Ballet in Orange Beach will enhance the holiday spirit with their annual performance of The Nutcracker Ballet on Sunday, December 2 at 7 p.m. at the Foley Civic Center. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for children age 5 or under. Advance purchase of tickets is recommended. Tickets are available at H.L. Over 90 local performers, including 70 students of Gulf Coast Ballet, and volunteer actors from the community, will perform this classical Christmas ballet. Pink Out at Worship On The Water : Worship at The Water @ The Flora-Bama® Celebrates “Pink Out” Day Perdido Key’s only worship service used the month of October to emphasize cancer awareness and add a focus on helping those who are currently struggling with the disease. The worship team ordered special pink versions of their now-famous “My Church is @ the Flora-Bama” T-shirts and are using the funds raised from the sale of these shirts to help with the co-payments of cancer patients. Orange Beach Fire Department sent their pink fire truck, Cindy, to the Flora-Bama to help with the effort. The pink fire truck is used as a non-profit fundraising effort and the Orange Beach team is part of the Lower Alabama Chapter of Guardians of The Ribbon. Pink-Out Day included attendees wearing pink and a special message by Ellissa Mount, wife of Pastor Jeremy Mount, who shared the story of losing her brother to cancer a few years ago. Worship at The Water meets every Sunday at 11:00 a.m. at the Flora-Bama. The service started in August of 2011 and since then more than 25,000 people have been to “Church” at the Flora-Bama. Worship at The Water is an outreach of Perdido Bay United Methodist Church. More info can be found at Facebook.com/florabamaworship.

Mural of Alabama’s Marine mammal and newest landmark at Tacky Jack’s Gulf Shores : With the Intracoastal Waterway as a backdrop, artists Dwight Kirkland and Michael Colley introduced a mural of Alabama’s marine mammal and newest landmark at Tacky Jack’s Gulf Shores on March 9. The Pennsylvanians had just spent two weeks creating an extraordinary 38-foot tall mural at the restaurant, located under the south end of the Hwy. 59 Bridge. The multiple manatee mural, well lit and spectacular, was put on debut during a reception for the artists and The Dauphin Island Sea Lab’s Manatee Sighting Network (MSN). “This is our biggest manatee awareness effort yet,’’ said Dr. Ruth Carmichael, director of the MSN.
